Maputo, June 8, 2023 (ECA) - Mozambique is making significant progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by prioritizing gender data collection. The government recently hosted a series of workshops and meetings aimed at strengthening gender statistics in the country.
The initiative, known as Capacity Building for Gender Statistics and Monitoring Systems (CB-GenSMS), is part of a broader project being implemented in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, and Burundi, with support from the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The primary objective of the CB-GenSMS project is to improve the availability of reliable data, which is crucial for designing evidence-based policies that promote gender equality and women's empowerment across Africa.
Recognizing the importance of comprehensive data for policymaking, the Mozambican government has taken proactive measures to ensure its availability. This includes the publication of the report "Men and Women in Mozambique" and the upcoming release of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS).
To assess progress, identify challenges, and inform policy formulation, Mozambique produces periodic reports aligned with important frameworks such as the Beijing Platform for Action and the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
Despite these advancements, the country still faces gender data gaps in crucial development areas, requiring targeted policies and focused attention.
Acknowledging this need, the government is actively working on conducting a comprehensive time-use survey. This initiative aims to recognize the significant contributions of the care economy and alleviate the disproportionate burden of care placed on women.
Additionally, the ongoing development of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) presents a good opportunity to enhance gender statistics in Mozambique. Integrating gender considerations within the NSDS and the National Development Strategy (NDS) is essential for promoting inclusive and cost-effective policies.
To fulfill its international and regional commitments, including Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063, the government is determined to enhance its monitoring and reporting framework. By providing timely and evidence-based reporting, Mozambique aims to uphold its obligations and contribute to global efforts towards sustainable development.
The government has expressed its deep appreciation for the support provided by the ECA and AfDB through the CB-GenSMS project. This initiative effectively complements the overall assistance provided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation framework (UNSDCF) in Mozambique.
As Mozambique strengthens its gender statistics and monitoring systems, it takes significant steps towards achieving the SDGs. With a comprehensive approach that emphasizes capacity building, data availability, and policy integration, Mozambique continues to lead the way towards a more inclusive and equitable society, where gender equality and women's empowerment are central to development efforts.
