Chimoio City, Mozambique, 1 September 2023 - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is delighted to announce the upcoming 8th edition of the Connected African Girls Coding Camp, a pioneering event set to boost digital literacy in Lusophone countries. This transformative initiative will take place at the esteemed Pungue University, located in Manica Province, Mozambique. Scheduled from October 23rd to 29th, 2023, this flagship initiative will be organized by ECA in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education (MCTES) as well as Pungue University, both representing the Government of Mozambique.

The 8th edition of the Connected African Girls initiative remains committed to tackling the challenges of digital literacy and the skills gap prevalent due to the scarcity of digital training opportunities in local languages. Consequently, ECA has successfully secured the commitment of government representatives to host an impactful coding boot camp with the involvement of local experts and Portuguese training modules. This initiative is geared towards augmenting the implementation of digital literacy programs for young girls and women within schools. The co-hosting of this edition by

ECA and the Republic of Mozambique aim to lay the foundation for a sustainable approach, integrating this strategy into schools and eventually weaving it into the national curriculum.

Over the span of seven days, this tailored boot camp will cater to more than 60 young girls and women, aged 12 to 25, joining from various provinces of Mozambique. Participants will journey from regions including Maputo Province, Maputo City, Gaza, Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Sofala, Quelimane, Tete, and Inhambane.

Moreover, the scope of ECA's reach extends to encompass girls from Sao Tome and Principe, as well as Angola to join the workshop. This strategy entails collaboration with the governments of Sao Tome and Principe and Angola, with the goal of facilitating the adoption of digital capacity development programs across the Lusophone countries. Through this dynamic exchange of knowledge between ECA and involved Member States, we aim to foster a collaborative and sustainable approach to enhancing digital skills and literacy throughout the region.

To maximize the impact, the Mozambique coding camp will adopt a hybrid format, welcoming young girls from across Lusophone countries. An online registration link is available on all our official partner platforms, allowing interested audience to secure their spot and be part of this innovative educational opportunity.
