Lomé (Togo), 21 February 2022 – The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Sub-regional Office for West Africa (SRO-WA/ECA), organized on February 16 in Lome, Togo, a dialogue with members of the West African Economic Journalists Network.
This meeting, which was held in a context where Africa's financial needs are enormous ($256 billion per year before the Covid-19 pandemic) due to the development deficit, is part of a series of dialogues initiated by the ECA/SRO-WA as a prelude to the Fifty-fourth Session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (COM2022) of ECA, scheduled for March 2022 under the theme: “Financing Africa’s Recover: Breaking New Ground”.
The objective of these exchanges was to engage the members of the West African Economic Journalists Network on the issues of financing the development of West African countries.
According to the Director of the SRO-WA/ECA, Madame Ngone Diop, "This dialogue will highlight the issues of financing the continent's development, in the context of Covid-19 pandemic, by emphasizing the specific needs and imperatives of West African countries and on relevant and sustainable financing options”.
“Through this dialogue, we want to engage the members of the West African Economic Journalists Network on the production and dissemination of information on the financing needs of West African countries and the policy orientations to respond to them,” added Ms. Ngone Diop.
These exchanges on the theme of COM2022, which were held in the presence of some thirty journalists from the 15 ECOWAS Countries, made it possible to highlight the challenges facing the countries of West Africa, and to make proposals as to meet their financing needs.
