ECA supports Côte d'Ivoire to accelerate its structural transformation

28 June, 2021

Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), June 28, 2021 (ECA) - The Government of Côte d'Ivoire, through the Ministry of Planning and Development and the Sub-Regional Office for West Africa of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), launched on Friday the restitution of the 2020 report on structural transformation, employment and production and society for sustainable development in Côte d'Ivoire (STEPS4SD).

The production of this report, which follows a request from the Ministry of Planning and Development of Côte d'Ivoire to the ECA as part of the monitoring and evaluation of the National Development Plan (NDP 2016-2020) and the formulation of the NDP 2021-2025, is part of the ECA's fundamental mission to assist African countries in their efforts to accelerate structural transformation and sustainable development.

For the Chief of Staff of Cabinet of the Ministry of Planning and Development of Côte d'Ivoire, Mr. YEO Nahoua, "This study is part of the logic of consolidating the achievements and strengthening strategic planning placed at the heart of the development process of Côte d'Ivoire since 2011.

"Ensuring the structural transformation of the economy is a fundamental pillar of the development strategy of our country, and this is clearly stated in the NDP 2016-2020 and the NDP 2021-2025 being finalized," said the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Planning and Development of Côte d'Ivoire.

For the Director of the ECA's Sub-Regional Office for West Africa, Ngone Diop, "The production of this report is timely because it will help guide Côte d'Ivoire's economic policy options on two levels:  First, to consolidate the progress of the 2016-2020 NDP in terms of economic and social transformation and economic emergence, through economic diversification and technological modernization, the creation of decent and productive jobs and equitable social development, and secondly in its overall post COVID-19 recovery strategy."

According to the Director of ECA's West Africa Sub-Regional Office, "This STEPS4SD 2020 report, by providing relevant economic policy recommendations to accelerate Côte d'Ivoire's structural transformation, contributes to efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2063 Agenda: The Africa We Want.

This restitution workshop, which consisted of a presentation of the methodology and the main results, took place in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Women, Family and Children, the representative of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Côte d'Ivoire and representatives of the National Assembly, the Court of Audit, the Ministries of Planning and Development, Economy and Finance, Defence, Local Authorities, and several other executives and experts from institutions and structures involved in the formulation and implementation of economic and social development policies in Côte d'Ivoire.
