Online, 16 August 2021 - Preparations are well underway for the Africa Regional Review Conference of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), scheduled to take place virtually on 31 August and 1 September 2021.
Jointly organized by the UN Network on Migration, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM); held in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), and hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco, this gathering provides an opportunity to review regional, sub-regional and national progress towards the implementation of the GCM in Africa. The GCM is a cooperative framework aiming to address international migration in all its dimensions including identifying new priorities and additional resources required to fully implement the Global Compact for Migration in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To ensure a coordinated approach and effectively support African Member States and regional economic communities (RECs), the Africa Regional Review is being undertaken at the national, subregional and continental levels, with ECA guiding the process at the regional level, the AUC guiding the review at the subregional and REC level, and IOM, which is also the Coordinator of the United Nations Network on Migration, supporting Member States in preparing country reports at the national level.
Ahead of the conference, eight side events will take place on 26 August and a multi-stakeholder consultation will be held on 27 August, to allow a wide variety of stakeholders to share their insights on GCM implementation in Africa.
The review report from the conference will feed into the International Migration Review Forum to be held in New York in the first half of 2022, informing the discussion on migration-related trends, challenges and practices in Africa.
